What to Prepare Before Starting a Website Project

Starting right saves time, money, and stress
Whether you’re launching your first website or redesigning an outdated one, the success of your project depends heavily on what you bring to the table before the design work even begins. Good preparation sets the tone for a smooth process and a better outcome.
1. Clear business goals
What do you want your website to achieve? Generate leads? Sell products? Build trust? Your designer can only design with purpose if you’re clear about your end goals.
2. A rough page structure
You don’t need a full sitemap, but a general idea of the key pages (e.g., Home, About, Services, Contact, Blog) helps us shape the layout and navigation early on.
3. Basic brand assets
Having your logo, color codes, and font preferences ready will save you time and money. If you don’t have a brand identity yet, that’s okay — just be upfront so we can include it in the scope.
4. Website content or a plan for it
Copy matters. If you have it ready, great. If not, start drafting or decide whether you'll need help writing it. Designing around solid content leads to stronger design decisions.
5. Examples of what you like
Sharing websites you admire (even if they're outside your industry) helps clarify your design taste, tone, and functional preferences.
6. Realistic budget and timeline
Know your budget range and ideal launch timeline. It helps set expectations, shape priorities, and avoid unnecessary delays later in the process.
Final thoughts
Good design is a collaboration. The more you prepare up front, the more focused, efficient, and successful the project will be. A little clarity early on goes a long way.
